News from ESC 2013; future trends in teleradiology; smartphone usage

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Imaging now forms a major part of the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Put simply, the event's too large and important to ignore, so we've brought you news direct from this week's congress in Amsterdam. We also have a selection of the best images from the meeting, which you can find here.

Using coronary CT angiography to triage patients presenting to the emergency room with chest pain is a red-hot topic, so original research from Italy was bound to generate huge interest. To find out more, go to our Cardiac Imaging Digital Community, or click here.

In addition, we interviewed Dr. Richard Underwood from London about his firm belief that the usefulness of imaging prior to noncardiac surgery for preoperative cardiac risk assessment may have been overstated. Get the story here.

Experts agree, however, that imaging does have a key role to play in the diagnosis of stable coronary artery disease, and new ESC guidelines are available. Check back tomorrow to our Cardiac Imaging Digital Community for an exclusive interview with Dr. Stefan Achenbach about the guidelines.

In one of this year's more surprising career moves, the senior U.K. radiologist Dr. Stephen Davies recently became medical director of Medica Reporting, the teleradiology company. We invited him to share his thoughts on future trends in teleradiology. To learn more, visit our PACS Digital Community, or click here.

Meanwhile, Swiss researchers have investigated how smartphone photos of patient injuries can be incorporated into the patient record. Click here to read more.

During the summer break, you might have missed our tribute article to Dr. Roberto Passariello from Rome, who died on 11 August. In case you haven't seen our most popular article from last month, click here.
