Dear CT Insider,

New developments in CT featured prominently at this month's European Congress of Radiology (ECR), and this newsletter aims to highlight some of the clinical breakthroughs unveiled at the meeting in Vienna.

Cases of peritoneal carcinomatosis often pose a challenge to surgeons and oncologists. Even though the disease is limited to the peritoneal surface, complete surgical removal is not possible, and systemic chemotherapy may be ineffective. CT now provides vital information in such cases, and at ECR 2012, researchers from Rome won a prestigious Magna Cum Laude award for their electronic poster about this topic. Another Italian CT expert, Dr. Filippo Cademartiri, PhD, from Treviso, made headlines at ECR. He maintained that CT angiography can act as a gatekeeper in coronary artery disease by identifying outlier patients and enabling dedicated trials to characterize biomarkers and genomics of protective/antiprotective factors. Meanwhile, cardiac researchers from Barcelona, Spain, revealed that most low-risk asymptomatic patients in their 50s demonstrate occult coronary artery disease at coronary CT angiography, but very few are at imminent risk of death. Click here to learn more.

Dose concerns remain a central issue in CT, but manufacturers appear to be gradually coming to terms with the issue after making considerable investments in new technology. They displayed their latest innovations in the ECR 2012 exhibit hall, and you can read more here.

Pulmonary nodules represent an everyday challenge, particularly because new techniques are detecting more lesions. CT plays a critical role as an imaging biomarker for these nodules, and the modality can also help determine patient management. Get the story here.

Looking ahead, CT will be one of the imaging modalities used on injured athletes at the Summer Olympics. A 64-slice CT unit will be installed soon at the polyclinic in London. Read our exclusive interview with top musculoskeletal radiologist Dr. Phil O'Connor by clicking here.
