Week in Review: Italian radiologist faces inquiry | Tribute to Henrik Thomsen | Wearable coil for breast MRI

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Dr. Gianluca Fanelli is facing what can only be described as a bizarre investigation after he scanned and operated on his own cat after working hours. The local health authority has referred the case to prosecutors in Aosta, Italy, and Fanelli may face charges of wasting public money and depriving patients of essential services.

To find out more about this incident, go to our report.

In other news this week, Prof. Henrik Thomsen stepped down from his influential post at Acta Radiologica. Thomsen rose to prominence in 2007, after his comments about gadolinium contrast agents led to a protracted libel suit. He's been an important figure in European radiology for many years, and you can learn more about him in this tribute.

Meanwhile, an Austrian study has found that supine breast MRI with a lightweight, wearable radiofrequency coil vest can help to improve lesion localization in radiotherapy planning, surgery, targeted ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided biopsy, potentially reducing the need for MR-guided biopsies.

Ensuring a vendor-neutral breast density estimate is crucial to prevent an inherent bias in assigning high-risk status during screening and failing to do so would affect the number of women invited for an adapted screening regime, according to new research from Belgium.

ECR 2025 is less than three weeks away, and as part of our build-up to the congress, we've posted a short video interview with Prof. Dr. Christian Loewe, the eminent interventional radiologist and educator from Vienna. Look out for more interviews in the run-up to the meeting.
