Irish radiologist, 37, dies of cancer

Tributes have been paid to a gifted young radiologist and mother-of-two from County Westmeath who has died from brain cancer, according to a report posted on 5 December by the Irish Mirror.

Caitriona "Triona" Logan, 37, worked at Regional Hospital Mullingar as a specialist registrar in diagnostic radiology, and she had a keen interest in pediatric and thoracic imaging. She first became aware something was not right after experiencing issues with her eyesight, sometimes getting blurred vision along with feelings of pressure in her head if she was lying down and playing with her two children (Kitty, aged 4, and Barra, 2), the Irish Mirror reported.

In late 2023, the local community launched a fundraising campaign for her to take part in a new oncovirus therapy being trialed in the U.S. and Canada. Over €300,000 was raised through a GoFundMe page. The family said any unused funds would be donated to the Irish Cancer Society.

"Caitriona was a wonderful classmate and friend to so many of us in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) -- full of fun and vigour, always a joy to be around. We were devastated to hear of her passing," said one of her former classmates at the RCSI.

"Fly high and at peace, Caitriona. A wonderful doctor and person, who could light up a room even on a dire 24-hour shift. Sincere condolences to Caitriona's family. You have a very special guardian angel looking over you," read another tribute.
