Week in Review: Heart disease risk assessment | Key trends in CT and MRI | Social isolation and cognitive decline

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Imaging is playing an increasingly important role in cardiovascular assessment, as demonstrated by a new study from Utrecht in the Netherlands about an improved method for coronary calcium scoring.

The authors confirm that coronary artery calcium evaluation is not only of clinical value for initial risk stratification but also in follow-up analysis. You can get the full story in our CT Community.

The King's Fund is a well-respected and established independent think tank that analyzes the organization and delivery of healthcare in the U.K. Its latest report looks at how the National Health Service compares with systems in other selected countries, and it contains some useful data on the availability and age of CT and MRI scanners.

Scientists from another prestigious institution, the Max Planck Institute, have investigated the possible link between social isolation and cognitive decline. They found that patients reporting social isolation had smaller hippocampus volumes and reduced cortical thickness. Find out more in the MRI Community.

Research from the University of Freiburg, Germany, has also captured our attention this week. The team noted that photon-counting CT effectively detects heart disease in high-risk patients, and the group said that they expect the technology to enter mainstream clinical practice over the next decade.

Finally, we have a news report from Spain about a notable achievement by a radiologist in the political arena. Dr. Fátima Matute Teresa is to become the new minister of health for the Community of Madrid.
