The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) has sought to focus attention on treatments for ischemic stroke to mark World Stroke Day, which was observed on 29 October.
The current rate of thrombectomies in hospitals is about 11 to 22 patients per 100,000 people, according to the Spanish Interventional Neuroradiology Group (GENI). SERAM estimates that by 2025, 1.2 million Spanish people will have survived a stroke, with 500,000 of these coping with some kind of stroke-induced disability.
In a statement, SERAM outlined how thrombectomy is performed. The society also elaborated on the intended outcome and how to measure success.
"Success in thrombectomy can be measured in two ways," Dr. José Ignacio Gallego, a neuroradiologist at the General University Hospital of Alicante, said. "By removing the thrombus, which has a success rate of between 80% and 90%, and [by gauging] the patient's recovery, which depends on the time that has passed since the patient suffered the stroke before treatment."
