The Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM) and the Spanish Society of Breast Imaging (SEDIM) have advised that women begin breast cancer screening at age 40, following the release of European and American guidelines.
The guidelines take into account screening benefits for women between the ages of 40 and 50, drawing from results published by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Toledo Population Screen.
"Given the new guidelines within the international context, both in Europe and in the U.S., and all the technological advances, the SERAM and the SEDIM recommend that in Spain the age of breast cancer screening be lowered to 40 years (with biennial mammography as recommended by the European community), since there is scientific evidence of increased incidence at younger ages," SERAM said in a press release issued on 18 October.
