This month's summer ECR had a more "theatrical" look, noted Peter Baierl, executive director of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) in an article posted on 21 July by the Austrian website Leadersnet. The meeting also set new standards for modern, digitized events, he said.

The concept was based in part on panel discussions made possible by digital stage design, crane cameras, and teleprompters, and the professors were like movie stars, said Baierl, who has been an important figure in the evolution and development of ECR since the congress organizers first chose Vienna as its permanent home in 1991.

The German-language article in Leadersnet heaps much praise on ECR's new look and how Baierl and his team managed the project fulfilment with their administrative skills and creative flair.

ECR 2022 employed some techniques that could be used in future conferences, and these new trends aim to improve the experience of attending the congress by making it more attractive and immersive, he noted.

The Austria Center Vienna (ACV) offered design options through the combination of halls and foyers, equipped with catering stations and adjoining terraces. The ACV and the ECR are meeting the demand for both indoor and outdoor settings with the design of Hall X5, and the exhibition hall on the forecourt allows guests to network in the semi-outdoor areas and real outdoor areas, which have green terraces, he said.

Large floral displays have always been an integral part of ECR's design. Baierl added that discussion among congress organizers is now needed for the vision of the "conference of the future," including looking for ways to share infrastructures and sustainability ideas.
