Errors that occurred during a CT of a New Zealand woman's abdomen and pelvis delayed her cancer diagnosis, according to a report by the country's Health and Disability Commissioner that was published on 17 May.

The woman, who was in her 50s, missed her opportunity to undergo surgery for her liver cancer and died in 2019.

The radiologist who read the patient's scan failed to provide "reasonable care and skill," leading to her delayed liver cancer diagnosis. The radiologist should have sent the woman for additional scans because the liver lesions identified on her CT were difficult to characterize, according to the report.
