South African mammography developer CapeRay Medical was awarded a U.K. patent (GB2566942) for technology that combines digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) with automated breast ultrasound (ABUS).
The patent extends the company's intellectual property in the field of breast imaging by combining DBT and ABUS. Patients lie in a supine position and 3D images are acquired sequentially with the breasts in the same orientation and degree of compression under the influence of gravity.
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is reviewing the patent and CapeRay is taking advantage of the agency's Patent Prosecution Highway, which means much faster grant times and higher success rates.
