Korea's Ministry of Science and ICT has submitted two proposals for the international standardization of medical image-based 3D printing, according to a report released on 13 January in Korea Biomedical Review.
The two standard proposals were submitted to a joint technical committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). If successful, the proposals may be established as international standards as early as 2022, the ministry said.
In collaboration with 3D printing experts from several countries, Korean experts are taking the initiative to push for the international standardization of medical 3D printing. The proposals describe methods for creating individually tailored 3D-printed prosthetics based on medical imaging data.
Establishing a manufacturing process following international standards will help physicians create and use patient-specific 3D-printed medical products more conveniently than the current manual manufacturing process for implants, the ministry said.
