Armenia welcomes 1st nuclear medicine facility

The European Center of Nuclear Medicine -- the first of its kind to open in Armenia -- will respond to an increasing need in the region for radioisotope-based cancer treatment, according to an article from MassisPost.

In particular, the center will provide radioactive iodine therapy for thyroid cancer, which occurs at high rates throughout the region. Previously, patients seeking such treatment had to travel to Georgia.

"Now patients will be able to receive high-quality therapy in Armenia," stated Dr. Mikael Manukyan, PhD, executive director of the Erebouni Medical Center in Yerevan, in the article. Erebouni Medical Center invested in the construction of the new facility.

The center will acquire isotopes from abroad as needed, though it is hoped that usable isotopes will become available in Armenia in the future.
