3D-printed device offers insight into brain cell behavior

Researchers from the U.K. have created a 3D-printed device that replicates the way neurons encode and compute information, according to an article published online on 26 October in PLOS Biology.

The group, led by Tom Baden, PhD, from the University of Sussex, sought to mimic neuronal behaviors using basic electronic and 3D-printed components. Ultimately, they hoped to provide a relatively cost-effective way for people to study brain cell activity, the authors wrote.

The 3D-printed device, referred to as Spikeling, has already served as a teaching tool for neuroscience students at the university and at a Nigerian summer school. Approximate cost for the device is 28.6 euros.
