VIENNA - Rarely has the weather been so kind during ECR. We've not seen a drop of rain, and there was no need for the winter coat, hat, and gloves.
But don't be lulled into a false sense of security. The title of this year's congress, "The Flower Gardens of Radiology," suggests all is rosy, but most definitely it isn't.
The gadolinium issue remains unresolved, and continued market uncertainly, product withdrawals, and lawsuits look highly likely. Burnout, dissatisfaction, and gender inequality are growing issues. And Brexit poses a grave, menacing threat not only to the future of U.K. radiology but also to European unity and harmony as a whole.
On the plus side, the imaging community is discussing these big issues and trying to tackle them. That was evident to all at ECR 2017. A decade ago, sessions on burnout would have been inconceivable. A topic like that would have got brushed under the carpet, as if it didn't exist, but now it's being addressed head-on. That must be healthy.
