Top tips for job interviews; update on cardiac MRI; ESC issues endocarditis guidelines

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

LONDON - To succeed in job interviews, you need to brush up on your communication skills and sell yourself better. That was the central message at an excellent special session held earlier this week at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) annual meeting.

The practical tips and tricks given by top cardiologist Dr. Martin Cowie from Imperial College London are just as relevant to radiologists and other medical doctors, and are well worth noting. To read more, go to our Cardiac Imaging Community, or click here.

The first three days of the congress were held over a U.K. public holiday weekend that saw nearly a million people head for the Notting Hill Carnival, the world's second largest street party. Despite such distractions, the ESC claims the meeting attracted 32,773 delegates. As well as Cowie's workshop, there was certainly a great deal on offer in the ExCel Congress Centre:

  • Monday's schedule featured a state-of-the-art lecture on the prognostic role of cardiovascular MRI. Get the story here.

  • New guidelines on imaging of infective endocarditis were unveiled, taking account of emerging techniques such as PET/CT. Find out more here.

  • And even though the temperatures outside were far from barmy, free ice cream in the exhibition hall proved a big winner, as this photo confirms.

Meanwhile, European Radiology has published multicenter research showing the prevalence of MRI-related symptoms associated with shift length and the number of hours per week working with the modality. Visit the MRI Community, or click here.

Last but not least, a Swedish study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention has found that women who receive false-positive mammograms are twice as likely to experience long-term, unpleasant, psychosocial consequences as women with negative exams.
