GE Healthcare has unveiled its Vscan Access portable ultrasound system for developing regions at the 68th session of the World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva.
Designed for use during pregnancy assessments in low-resource settings by primary healthcare workers such as midwives, general practitioners, paramedics, and clinical officers, Vscan Access features a simple touchscreen interface, a rugged design, and software tools to support clinical decision-making, according to the vendor. It includes Bluetooth wireless connectivity to support data transfer to referral facilities or remote experts, GE said.
The vendor is also highlighting software tools for Vscan Access such as pregnancy education videos for patients, a multilingual user interface, and a reference library of images to support novice ultrasound users. In addition, GE said it will provide healthcare practitioners and policymakers in developing nations with training, comprehensive service coverage, and access to other low-cost devices such as warmers, incubators, resuscitation devices, and anesthesia.
GE has introduced Vscan Access for certain countries in Africa and Southeast Asia.
