Large German population study launches

German researchers last month launched the National Cohort (NAKO) in Essen.

Over the next 30 years, NAKO plans to use MRI in a detailed exploration of chronic disease development, with the goal of creating effective preventive strategies and examining the relationship between disease, lifestyle, and environmental factors.

Through NAKO, some 200,000 subjects will be examined and questioned about their life circumstances.

NAKO will be performed at 18 study centers and funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research and the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers with a total of 210 million euros.

Approximately 21 million euros will be allocated for the radiological part of the study.
