Image-guided therapy firm Brainlab said its new Automatic Brain Metastases Planning software is now being used at Assuta Hospital in Tel Aviv, Israel.
The software was used to provide radiosurgery to a patient with metastatic brain cancer in a single-fraction, 20-minute session with only six minutes of "beam-on" time.
The 62-year-old woman's breast cancer had metastasized to her brain, and she was previously treated with whole-brain radiotherapy. Her metastases recurred nine months later and all four were treated in the 20-minute session.
Brainlab's Automatic Brain Metastases Planning software is pending clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
