RCR praises new report on variation in diagnostic tests

The U.K. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) said that it welcomes the release of a National Health Service (NHS) report revealing geographic variations in the range of diagnostic patient tests -- including imaging studies -- that are being requested across the U.K.

In a statement, the RCR said it's concerned some patients may face unwarranted, poorer access to some imaging techniques based purely on where they live. Because the best use of imaging can keep people out of hospital or allow them to be discharged more quickly, it's vital that imaging services be consistently available to referring healthcare professionals throughout the patient pathway and across the U.K., according to the RCR.

The RCR is urging clinical commissioning groups and local clinical teams to examine the range of imaging services they have in place, and assessing and addressing the reasons for unwarranted variation in referral and care.
