The European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR) has applauded the European Council's adoption of the revised Directive on Protecting Workers from Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (EMF Directive).
The Alliance for MRI played a central role in the negotiation process that led to the new directive. It is a coalition of European parliamentarians, patient groups, leading European scientists, and the medical community, who together sought to avert the serious threat posed by EU health and safety legislation to the clinical and research use of MRI.
The new EMF Directive contains a crucial article that provides derogation from the directive's exposure limits for the use of MRI. COCIR Secretary General Nicole Denjoy said in a statement that the organization and its members have been advocating on this issue for almost 10 years.
Looking ahead, COCIR said it now looks forward to working with the commission on developing best-practice guidance for protecting workers using MRI in all of the EU's member states.
