Elekta announces radiation therapy progress in Iraq

Radiation oncology firm Elekta is pushing ahead with a number of new installations of its radiation therapy equipment in Iraq, the company reported at the recent Arab Health meeting in Dubai.

Elekta has been supporting the Iraqi Ministry of Health as it works to rebuild the country's healthcare infrastructure after years of war, unrest, and embargoes, according to the company.

The vendor was recently chosen to supply equipment to the Medical City in Baghdad, as well as to a new cancer facility in the Al-Maimouna district of western Maysan province in southern Iraq. Elekta will provide two Synergy systems, its Mosaiq oncology information system, and treatment planning technology to the facility, which will become operational in the spring of 2013.

Also, the Radiation Oncology Center at Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan, recently installed its second Elekta Synergy system. The unit will help alleviate patient load at the center, which serves a region of 4.5 million people and where a six-month wait for treatment is common.
