3T MRI of cocaine addiction; cardiac CT news from ESC; Olympic teamwork

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

Cocaine use may be leveling off in Europe, but it remains a major social problem worldwide. At this week's annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), held in Munich, two new studies highlighted the role of imaging in addressing the health issues resulting from addiction.

Spanish researchers are convinced that 3-tesla MRI can help in these cases. To find out how, go to our Cardiac Imaging Digital Community, or click here.

In other ESC news, researchers from 16 centers in eight countries found that the ability of CT angiography (CTA) to detect flow-limiting coronary artery disease was significantly improved with the addition of 320-detector-row CT perfusion. Get the story here.

We have other articles from ESC about cardiac CT, including important research from Germany about the causes of false-positive diagnoses in CTA. Click here for that report.

Plus, make sure you view our photo gallery from the ESC meeting, and check back to the Cardiac Imaging Digital Community for further stories about the meeting over the next week or more. The event has now ended, but we're not finished yet!

Hot on the heels of the London 2012 Olympics, the opening ceremony for the Paralympics takes place today. To mark the occasion, we've got an exclusive interview with imaging lead Dr. Phil O'Connor about working life in the Polyclinic, which will remain open until 9 September. Visit our MRI Digital Community, or click here.

Getting material published in Radiology is never easy, so Dr. Francesco Garaci from Rome and colleagues deserve plenty of praise. Their article published online on 21 August shows how MRI changes in brain blood flow associated with vein abnormalities are not specific for multiple sclerosis and do not contribute to the affliction's severity.
