Radiation oncology firm Elekta announced that the N.N. Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute in Moscow has treated its 400th patient using the company's Leksell Gamma Knife Perfexion system.
The system was installed in June 2011 and replaced the first Leksell Gamma Knife installed in Russia, also at the N.N. Burdenko Neurosurgical Institute, which treated 1,812 patients between 2005 and 2011. Patients with metastases represent 37% of the system's weekly volume of 15 to 20 patients.
The perfusion model streamlines radiosurgery workflow and expands treatable volume through an automated, multisource collimator. With the capability, patient setup and treatment delivery to one or more tumors in a single session are faster, according to the company.
