U.K. firm developing intraoperative breast MR scanner

U.K. MRI technology developer Specialty Magnetics is working on an intraoperative breast MRI scanner.

The new system will allow physicians to perform image-guided surgery as soon as problems are detected and diagnosed, according to the London-based firm. Specialty Magnetics is a wholly owned subsidiary of Specialty Scanners and is collaborating with the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) on the initiative.

The 3.2 million-pound project ($6.3 million U.S.) will receive an investment of 1.6 million pounds ($3.2 million U.S.) from the U.K. government-sponsored Technology Strategy Board, Specialty Scanners said.
