Swedish bone densitometry vendor Demetech is touting clinical results on predicting risk of hip fracture with its DXL Calscan heel-scanning bone densitometer rather than larger dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) devices.
In a presentation at the American Society of Bone Mineral Research (ASBMR) annual meeting in Denver, researchers discussed how they used DXL Calscan to conduct bone density scans of the calcaneus in 4,398 Swedish women and calculated their risk of hip fracture.
Study data showed that 78% of women who experienced a hip fracture during the four-year follow-up period had an osteoporotic scan result at baseline from the DXL Calscan device. This rate is significantly higher than the 40% to 50% rate shown in previous studies performed using DEXA hip scans, the company said.
The Stockholm-based company believes that performing DXL Calscan exams of the heel will make bone studies more accessible to women at risk of osteoporosis due to the portability of the devices.
