Confusion has broken out in France after the country's government announced last week that women who have received breast implants manufactured by a now-defunct firm should have them removed due to high rates of rupture. The crisis has gone global following revelations that the firm, Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP, shipped the implants internationally and may have sold them under another name in the Netherlands.
French health officials are now trying to calm a frightened public regarding the safety of the implants, and they are advising that while the implants should be removed, it's not urgent that women do so immediately.
