Swedish PACS and digital mammography vendor Sectra said that Swedish researchers have found strong results from using the vendor's digital x-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) osteoporosis testing technology.
In a study presented at last week's 2010 RSNA meeting in Chicago, researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm sought to use the Linköping-based firm's DXR method to identify patients with a potential for future hip fracture.
They retrospectively analyzed historical radiographs depicting the left wrist in 8,257 patients with low-impact fractures, and found that age-adjusted bone mineral density was significantly lower in patients who later suffered from a hip fracture.
Sectra believes that the analysis of historical images in radiology databases could save millions of euros in osteoporosis costs.
