ECR 2012: Digital breast tomosynthesis; cutting CTA dose; trauma care

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

VIENNA - When the organizers decided to extend the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) by adding new scientific sessions on Thursday morning, they must have been a little nervous about the reaction. Time away from work is increasingly precious and hard to justify, and everybody is watching what they spend during the current mood of austerity.

As it turned out, they needn't have worried. From what I saw, attendance levels in the lecture halls were certainly acceptable for the 10.30 a.m. opening sessions, and large crowds of delegates queued in the registration area.

Our editorial team was also busy on the first day, and you can view the fruits of our labor on our RADCast @ ECR, which is updated throughout the congress. Here are some highlights from Thursday's offerings:

  • Will digital breast tomosynthesis replace full-field digital mammography in the next 10 years? Click here to find out why one presenter says yes.
  • A research team from Italy presented their technique for cutting radiation dose in coronary CT angiography (CTA). Learn more by clicking here.
  • Trauma care is a central theme at ECR 2012, and experts gave practical and timely advice on how to avoid CT becoming "the doughnut of death." Click here for the story.
  • Successful pancreatic cancer management relies increasingly on teamwork. To learn more, click here.
  • High-field MRI is making steady progress in cardiac imaging, and opinion leaders from Munich and Toronto had some tips for delegates. Get the story here.

Also, we have coverage from the pre-ECR teaching course organized by the European Society of Breast Imaging. Researchers from the University of Vienna are conducting groundbreaking studies involving the use of 3-tesla MRI systems. Click here for the details.
