A recent visit to China by senior officials from the Italian Society of Medical and Interventional Radiology (SIRM) has provided new opportunities for international collaboration and exchange of ideas in the field of radiology.
In a statement issued on 3 June, the society noted that a Chinese delegation attended the 51st SIRM congress in Milan last year. The Chinese radiologists were especially interested in the SIRM’s organizational model and activities, as well as its journal, La Radiologia Medica.
Following a series of collaborative online meetings and webinars (one with 17,000 participants), an invitation was extended by the Chinese Society of Radiology and the largest Chinese national scientific publishing house for an SIRM delegation to attend a series of meetings and visits to university hospitals in different cities across China from 17 to 24 May 2025.
The SIRM delegation visited the University Hospital Complex of the West China Hospital of Sichuan University in Chengdu; Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan; and the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University in Xi’an. The group finished the tour in Beijing, which serves as the venue for the annual Radiology Congress, to meet with their fellow radiologists.

The main topics of the meetings were discussions of the SIRM as a modern scientific society, the international role of SIRM and its vision of radiology’s future in light of new technologies, and La Radiologia Medica.
Following the trip, SIRM President Dr. Nicoletta Gandolfo and Past President Prof. Andrea Giovagnoni have extended a reciprocal invitation to the Chinese Society of Radiology for the 52nd National Congress in Milan in 2026.
