Dear PACS Insider,

Teleradiology was a hot topic at ECR 2015, even as concerns linger over its potential for facilitating the commoditization of radiology. How does the next generation of radiologists in Europe view teleradiology? If the opinions of radiology residents in Italy and France are any indication, they typically feel pretty good about it.

In a study presented at ECR 2015, a multinational research team found that Italian and French radiology residents overall had a favorable opinion on teleradiology. On the downside, survey respondents reported concerns over issues such as not having enough contact with clinicians and insufficient clinician trust in teleradiology, according to presenter Dr. Nadya Pyatigorskaya of Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in Paris. Similar results were reported in a related presentation that focused on the views of Italian consulting radiologists. In that study, nearly two-thirds of survey respondents had a favorable opinion of teleradiology and 80% believed it had a bright future. Click here for the details.

An interview with new European Society of Radiology (ESR) President Dr. Lluís Donoso Bach, PhD, addressed the threats to radiology from commoditization due to excessive outsourcing via teleradiology. Click here to learn more.
