Fujifilm Medical Systems has been awarded a PACS managed service contract for all of Wales for seven years. The deal is worth an estimated 20 million pounds (24.8 million euros).
The agreement will enable Welsh Local Health Boards and the Velindre Trust to have one common PACS service and a centralized vendor-neutral archive (VNA) and remote backup. These will be phased in between 2012 to 2014.
The first operational phase involves the central VNA together with the first of seven Welsh Local Health Boards being established. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board will be the first authority to implement a Synapse PACS, with a targeted completion date of January 2013. This phase involves three primary sites.
The first of these three primary sites, Ysbyty Gwynedd, went live in August. Its configuration from Fuji includes 13 computed radiology (CR) and two wireless digital radiography (DR) systems, 18 diagnostic workstations, and 33 speech recognition reporting systems. More than 1 million patient studies, including 25 million diagnostic images, have been migrated, a total of 30 TB of data.
For the next two phases, another 70 TB of data will be migrated.
