Dear Artificial Intelligence Insider,

Adopting artificial intelligence (AI) software in radiology changes the workflow. To succeed, it takes a thoughtful plan and participation by many stakeholders, according to Dr. Erik Ranschaert, PhD, president of the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EuSoMII).

In a recent EuSoMII webinar, Ranschaert discussed the key workflow issues involved with radiology AI and shared his suggestions for how healthcare institutions can implement these tools in daily clinical practice.

With all the publicity over the past few years about the possibility of AI soon rendering radiologists obsolete, concern has emerged that this misconception may be dissuading medical students from radiology. Prior studies in the literature have yielded conflicting results; a significant proportion of medical students in Canada were reportedly less likely to select the specialty as a profession, while a German research team concluded that only a minority of medical students believed AI would replace radiologists. Medical students in Switzerland were more pessimistic, however, on the impact of AI on diagnostic radiologists.

A new study from the U.K. highlights the importance of education in addressing these challenges. Although about half of the surveyed medical students indicated they were less likely to pursue a career in radiology due to the perceived threat of AI, the researchers also found that students who had received teaching in AI were more likely to consider radiology than those who hadn't.

In other AI news, investigators have reported that a deep-learning algorithm can extract interpretable features from annotation-free histopathology images from prostate cancer patients, yielding a framework that outperformed conventional Gleason score-based methods for predicting biochemical recurrence. Also, the participation of European societies in a 2019 statement on the ethical use of AI in radiology was voted as the EuroMinnies 2020 winner in the category of Most Significant News Event in European Radiology.
