U.K. technology firm Behold.ai has developed an algorithm that correctly identified cancer in 91% of patients with an eventual diagnosis, the company noted in a press release.
The algorithm analyzed chest x-rays from 1,513 patients at the University Hospitals of Leicester National Health Service Trust. Patients suspected of having cancer were referred for a CT scan directly after the x-ray.
The algorithm correctly identified the presence and location of 10 out of 11 histologically confirmed cancers. The results, which were presented at the British Thoracic Oncology Group annual conference in Dublin in late January 2020, demonstrate the algorithm's promise as a way to save time to diagnosis, Behold.ai noted.
