German hospital 1st to achieve top rating for EMRs

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany is the first hospital in Europe to achieve the top rating on HIMSS Analytics' Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) scale.

The hospital achieved stage 7, which is awarded for achieving a paperless medical record environment. To be confirmed as EMRAM Stage 7, the hospital had to prove that it no longer uses paper charts to deliver and manage patient care, but uses a mixture of discrete data, document images, and medical images within its electronic medical record environment. In addition, clinical data warehouses must be in use to analyze patterns of clinical data to improve quality of care and patient safety. Clinical information can be readily shared via standardized electronic transactions with all entities that are authorized to treat the patient, according to HIMSS Analytics.

The hospital will officially be recognized at the CIO Summit in Geneva 20-22 November 2011 for reaching stage 7.

The hospital uses Siemens Healthcare's Soarian Clinicals and Soarian Health Archive for its electronic patient record.
