Week in Review: Workforce crisis in U.K. | AI use in liver cancer | News from RöKo & UKIO

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

The U.K. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR) has warned about workforce shortages for nearly three decades, documenting the problems and accurately predicting the future, but it’s been ignored by successive governments, according to our regular columnist Dr. Paul McCoubrie.

He thinks it’s now time for the RCR to use stronger media tactics to get its voice heard -- and this is exactly what it’s trying to do in its annual reports on the status of radiology and oncology. Let’s hope the government listens.

In other news, the team led by Dr. Raquel Pérez López, PhD, chair of the ESR Research Committee, has demonstrated the potential for a novel, CT-based deep learning-driven tool to enhance liver cancer diagnosis, treatment planning, and response evaluation. Find out more in our news article.

The in-person element of the 106th edition of the German Radiology Congress (Deutscher Röntgenkongress, RöKo 2025) ended in Wiesbaden on 30 May. We’ve posted a picture gallery from the event.

Meanwhile, AI luminary Jan Beger attended this week’s UK Imaging & Oncology (UKIO) congress in Liverpool and was impressed by how much radiology AI is progressing.

When it comes to healthcare AI research, Kicky van Leeuwen, PhD, and Stephan Romeijn are among the most respected experts in Europe, so don’t miss their evaluation of how AI products assist in the management of intracranial hemorrhage.
