Italian clinicians have introduced discrete proton arc optimization through RaySearch Laboratories' RayStation, combined with their standard delivery techniques and treatment workflows using IBA Proteus Plus, to treat patients at the Trento Proton Therapy Center in Italy.
In an announcement, RaySearch noted the finalization of a research study at Trento, where the medical physics team compared their current treatment planning technique with proton arcs to discrete proton arc therapy for head and neck cancer patients. In discrete proton arc therapy, the protons are delivered over 20 to 30 directions, according to RaySearch.
The team performed quality assurance measurements with a detector designed for arc therapy and assessed the impact on the clinical workflow, RaySearch said. Discrete proton arc therapy delivered by Trento's current treatment system from IBA is clinically feasible and treatments have now started.
The main research interest of the Trento Proton Therapy Center is the further technical improvement of proton therapy treatment paradigms, RaySearch also noted.
