Spain's pains keep growing; structured reports come of age; new advice on coronary CT angiography

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

It's been a tough few years for Spain. The nation's been hit hard by the economic downturn, and its radiologists have faced other challenges, particularly in terms of their visibility to patients and the threats from teleradiology.

Dr. José Luis del Cura Rodríguez became president of the Spanish Society of Radiology in May 2014 and is working hard to address these issues. In a rare interview, he gives an honest assessment of the progress made so far, and he reveals his passion for mountains, handball, and Athletic Bilbao. Click here to read more.

Structured reporting has been around for over a decade, and though its rationale is compelling, its implementation has been sluggish. This situation is changing fast, according to a group of well-respected researchers. Go to our Healthcare Informatics Community, or click here.

High rates of inappropriate referrals can be a serious problem for a CT coronary angiography service, so the U.K.'s new guidelines on the technique are bound to generate plenty of interest. Better still, they're available for free. Visit our Cardiac Imaging Community, or click here.

In Europe, Finland probably leads the way when it comes to e-health. This topic came up at the First Annual European Coordination Committee of the Radiological, Electromedical and Healthcare IT Industry (COCIR) eHealth Summit and Workshop, held last month in Brussels. Get the story here.

Last but not least, don't miss our story from RSNA 2014 about why PET/CT with the radioisotope F-18 fluoroethylcholine is a feasible and promising imaging alternative to FDG-PET/CT in detecting cervical and endometrial tumors. Go to our Molecular Imaging Community, or click here.

Due to the Christmas holidays, our next weekly email newsletter will be distributed on Monday, 22 December, rather than our usual Wednesday. Make sure you check your inbox then.
