Dear MRI Insider,

The 99th annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) drew to a close on Friday, and Europe's leading MRI researchers played a very prominent role at the Chicago congress. In your MRI Digital Community, we've posted four articles from this important event, and you won't want to miss them:

  • 7-tesla time-of-flight (TOF) MR angiography (MRA) can provide superior assessment of aneurysms and related vessel features. A group from Essen University Hospital in Germany have validated the use of 7-tesla TOF MRA to overcome the limitations of 1.5-tesla imaging for assessing intracranial aneurysms, due to its high-quality vessel/tissue contrast and improved spatial resolution. Get the story here.

  • Energy drinks can change heart function. Using a novel cardiac MRI technique, scientists from the University of Bonn in Germany found significantly increased heart contraction rates in the left ventricle of healthy young adults one hour after they consumed these drinks. • MRI has a possible role in facial transplantation. No current role exists for MRI in this area, but in instances of potential acute, primary facial transplantation, MRI and MR angiography may be beneficial. To find out more, click here.

  • MRI has clinical value in colorectal liver metastases. In these patients, the main goals are to assess resectability, consider secondary resectability, and evaluate tumor response -- and MRI is more sensitive than CT for tumor detection, according to Dr. Valerie Vilgrain from Clichy, France.
