Travel lust changes lives; new Irish study on CT dose; whole-body MRI advances

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

When a young French doctor saw a travel poster for Morocco in the 1950s, nobody could have guessed how it would change his life and those of countless other people. Dr. Jacques Gillet followed his heart and moved to Africa. He ended up working for five decades in his adoptive country, playing a significant role in transforming radiological training and practice.

We invited radiologists in Morocco, France, and the U.S. to pay tribute to Gillet, who passed away on 27 August, and their response was instant and impressive. Get the story here.

There is considerable scope for improvement in the understanding of CT dose parameters, a new Irish-U.S. study has found. A survey conducted among the Republic of Ireland's 65 CT clinical specialist radiographers and examiners from the American Board of Radiology produced some fascinating results. Given Radiology's prestigious reputation and high impact factor, European research that gets accepted by the journal is always worth a close look. A whole-body MRI study from Munich was published online yesterday. To find out more, go to our MRI Digital Community, or click here.

Virtual autopsies continue to attract clinical attention, and the commercial side now seems to be heating up too. Malaysian company iGene has some particularly bold expansion plans in this area, and you can read about them here.

Dr. Stephan Achenbach is one of Europe's leading experts on cardiac imaging, and we interviewed him onsite at the European Society of Cardiology Congress 2013 in Amsterdam. Click here to discover what's on his mind.

For women with symptomatic uterine fibroids, embolization improves symptoms and total health-related quality of life more than MR-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound, Berlin researchers have reported in an article-in-press published this month in the European Journal of Radiology.
