Week in Review: Anxious times at Sapienza | MRI and hair extensions | Can we trust AI software?

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

A very dark cloud has hung over the radiology department at the world-famous Sapienza University Hospital in Rome since the death of Andrea Purgatori in July 2023. Now it looks likely that the saga will continue to rumble on for some time yet, after the initial hearing was set for 19 September.

We’ve posted an update on the case that’s captured the attention of the Italian media. As a trusted source told us, the six-month wait will be particularly difficult and tense “for healthcare professionals whose reputations might be damaged before the judge has even assessed whether malpractice occurred.”

According to Glamour magazine (13 December 2024), “Extensions are no longer just a trend but an integral part of modern hair care and styling. They provide instant volume and are ubiquitous.” However, they can also pose a problem for the safety of an MRI exam. Don’t miss our report on hair extensions and MRI.

More work is needed in different settings to understand the real-world implications of AI tools on radiologist decision-making, Dr. Lars Grimm of Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, the U.S., wrote this week. Grimm has welcomed the publication of European research in this area.

Meanwhile, the authors of a U.K. study concluded that mammography AI software still requires a lot of fine-tuning before considering its introduction into routine practice.

Finally, if you like human interest stories, you’ll enjoy Vienna Correspondent Claudia Tschabuschnig’s video interview with Dr. Salman Quereshi. He discussed his relocation from the North of England to the United Arab Emirates, and he also spoke about losing 43 kg in weight (nearly 7 stone) over four years.
