The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has announced that about 32,000 health professionals from 171 countries attended its 2024 congress, held in London from 30 August to 2 September.
The theme of the congress was “Personalizing Cardiovascular Care,” and included more than 4,400 abstracts, with China, the U.S., and Japan leading the way numerically. In addition, some 112 studies presented during the meeting were simultaneously published in journals, the ESC said.
Four major ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines, as well as a new consensus paper on obesity, were also presented at the meeting. The guidelines cover atrial fibrillation, elevated blood pressure and hypertension, chronic coronary syndromes, and peripheral arterial and aortic diseases.
“I recommend people review the guidelines, as there are several new recommendations or changes to existing ones. For example, in the hypertension guideline, we have a new systolic BP target of 120 to 129 mm Hg. In the chronic coronary syndrome guidelines, there is an entirely new algorithm for doctors to use when evaluating patients with suspected obstructive coronary artery disease,” noted ESC Vice-President Prof. Carlos Aguiar in a news release.
ESC 2025 will be held in Madrid, Spain, from 29 August to 1 September.
