The long wait: Report turnaround times grow in England

In the first three months of 2024, nearly 200,000 patients waited over a month for the results of their imaging scans, compared with 160,000 in the comparative quarter in 2023, according to the U.K. Royal College of Radiologists (RCR).

“This is because we do not have enough radiologists to report the level of scans that are being taken,” the RCR said, in an 18 July statement.

The statement comes in response to the release issued on 18 July of NHS England's Diagnostic Imaging Data and includes the RCR’s proposal to address the issue by ensuring more specialty training positions for radiologists. Specifically, the RCR is urging the government to fully fund the first two years of radiology training posts to support trusts and grow the capacity to report the increasing number of scans.
