Breast imaging specialists from Spain, including Dr. Myriam Montes from Madrid, have reaffirmed their stance on screening mammography for detecting breast cancers earlier in a document supported by the Spanish Society of Medical Radiology (SERAM).
As the world recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the experts gave their opinions on mammography as the gold standard for breast cancer screening. Their views were published on 3 October.
Montes, a breast specialist at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital and Nuestra Señora del Rosario, said that fear of mammography must be removed, adding that the testing process has significantly changed from 20 years ago. Montes also said that recent innovations such as tomosynthesis help radiologists see more subtleties that may have been previously overlooked, as well as helping avoid repeat tests and lessening radiation dosage for patients.
SERAM recommends lowering the age of breast cancer screening to 40 years in line with American guidelines and the trend of European guidelines.
