The French Society of Radiology (SFR) is honoring the legacy of Prof. Jean-Jacques Merland, a pioneer of interventional vascular neuroradiology who has died at the age of 81.
A pupil of René Djindjian, Merland developed an interventional radiology service at the UFR de Médecine Lariboisière-Saint-Louis in Paris and welcomed doctors from around the world for training in interventional neuroradiology. In its tribute, the SFR wrote that Merland was "curious about everything" and keen to acquire technical and clinical knowledge in other areas to better manage complex diseases.
The SFR also wrote that Merland was able to bring together different specialties, in meetings and consultations, which further improved knowledge of complex pathologies such as vascular malformations. Along with interventional neuroradiology, he was also an expert in peripheral interventional radiology, which included knowledge on renal and pulmonary hemorrhages, as well as postpartum hemorrhages.
The society also sends its condolences to Merland's family, including his wife Marie-France. The full tribute written by the SFR can be found here.
