Dear CT Insider,

When it comes to tricky cases of vocal cord paralysis, CT rules supreme and is the imaging modality of choice. It's particularly effective for detecting any underlying malignancies in this patient group, prizewinning researchers from Barcelona, Spain, have asserted.

The team has shared its experiences of this field in today's top article. Their three clinical cases deserve a particularly close look.

In another report posted this week, we focus on an important German study about the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage in severe cases of COVID-19. Nine university hospitals participated in research that included all COVID-19 patients who were treated in intensive care units and who underwent at least one brain CT scan from March 2020 to April 2022.

CT plays a key role in staging of endometrial cancer, but prediction of nodal metastasis remains problematic due to low sensitivity in normal-sized nodes, according to Prof. Andrea Rockall of Imperial College London. In a recent presentation, she outlined how new work aims to provide more clarity on disease prediction.

The increasing demand for CT scans represents a major workforce challenge across Europe, but particularly in the U.K. The Royal College of Radiologists' annual census has highlighted how the National Healthcare Service is relying heavily on outsourcing.

Finally, it's essential to keep in mind the range of adverse events that can result from the use of contrast agents in clinical practice, as shown by the disturbing case of an 80-year-old woman who developed compartment syndrome of the hand following a CT scan.
