The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) has launched a pilot clinical oncology and radiation oncology training initiative.
The Regional and Rural Training Pathway (RRTP) is a pilot program that will support radiologists and radiation oncologists across Australia. In this initial effort, five training positions will be offered to medical graduates and trainees at accredited training sites in regional and rural areas; RANZCR will offer scholarships to those who complete the pilot program that will cover training and exam fees for up to five years.
The latest RANZCR Workforce Census has revealed a persistent shortage of clinical radiologists in rural and regional Australia in which only 12.1% of clinical radiology workforce is located. The launch of the new RRTP Pilot is the first step in delivering on RANZCR’s commitment to developing a long-term, sustainable training pathway to grow clinical radiology and radiation oncology workforce for rural and regional Australia, aiming to address uneven distribution of clinical radiologists and radiation oncologists across the country.
The initiative is funded by the Australian government under its Flexible Approach to Training in Expanded Settings (FATES) program and will begin in February 2024
