The clinical benefits of photon-counting CT are so clear-cut that it's quite possible every CT system will eventually use these detectors, a Swiss expert has postulated.
Prof. Hatem Alkadhi, deputy director and senior physician at the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital Zurich, made this prediction in a podcast interview produced by the British Institute of Radiology (BIR).
"Even now at this early stage of clinical introduction, the advantages of photon-counting detector CT are so overwhelming that I believe that future CT systems will only use photon-counting detectors, provided that the costs can be kept within an affordable range," he said.
