The clinical benefits of photon-counting CT are so clear-cut that it's quite possible every CT system will eventually use these detectors, a Swiss expert has postulated.

Prof. Hatem Alkadhi, deputy director and senior physician at the Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, University Hospital Zurich, made this prediction in a podcast interview produced by the British Institute of Radiology (BIR).

"Even now at this early stage of clinical introduction, the advantages of photon-counting detector CT are so overwhelming that I believe that future CT systems will only use photon-counting detectors, provided that the costs can be kept within an affordable range," he said.

In the podcast, Alkadhi explains about the technology and how it differs from regular CT. He also discusses the main benefits and challenges of photon-counting CT and the most promising applications and developments.

You can listen to the interview on the BIR website.
