Week in Review: Radiology AI faces financial woes | Pros and cons of PET/CT | Industry roundup from ECR

Dear AuntMinnieEurope Member,

How many of the dozens of startup companies in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Exhibition & AI Theatre at ECR 2023 will be back in Vienna in March 2024? How many will disappear in the next five years? And how will the health tech sector evolve?

These questions are more relevant and topical after the collapse of the Silicon Valley Bank (SVB). Tougher economic times might well lie ahead. In this week's top article, we spoke with three experts to get their views on the implications of the SVB crisis.

As one of its early pioneers now describes it, hybrid PET/CT imaging may best be considered a technical evolution that has the potential to become a clinical revolution. That was the consensus of a pros and cons session at ECR 2023 discussing total-body and long axial field-of-view PET/CT scanners. Find out more in the Molecular Imaging Community.

As we flagged up before ECR, sustainability is a hot topic in European radiology right now. In a new column, Bhvita Jani from Signify Research discusses this and other trends she detected in the exhibit halls.

At ECR 2023, overall attendance levels were encouraging -- apparently vindicating the decision to return to the annual March schedule. But the organizers gave no details about how many delegates attended virtually, and clearly, it's going to take some time to return to the numbers seen onsite in the record year of 2019 -- if that ever happens.

Prof. Dr. Christiane Kuhl, a valued and active member of our Editorial Advisory Board, was unable to make it to ECR 2023, but we caught up with her earlier this week to find out her thoughts on the breast density and screening debate. We also checked in with Dr. Ritse Mann. Learn more in the Women's Imaging Community.
