A European group called the HyperProbe Consortium plans to develop a new optical imaging system by 2027 that will measure brain function more efficiently during surgery.
The project is called "Transforming brain surgery by advancing functional-guided neuronavigational imaging," and it will create a new "multifunctional hyperspectral imaging device" that will monitor brain activity and tumor borders during surgery using nonionizing light, the consortium said.
The HyperProbe Consortium brings together researchers, engineers, and physicists in the optical imaging field and computer scientists, artificial intelligence researchers, neurologists, and neurosurgeons from eight academic institutions across Europe, it said. It is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
