One of my favorite tasks at the RSNA meeting is to report on the country focus sessions. The practice and organization of radiology in Spain, the Netherlands, France, and Israel have all come under scrutiny over the last few years, and this week it was the turn of U.K. speakers to step up to the podium.
Workforce issues and training and education featured prominently. The U.K. faces an acute and growing shortfall of radiologists, and Dr. Priya Suresh summarized the current situation and outlined the strategy and action plan of the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR). Her energy and drive give some hope for the future.
In the same session, RCR President Dr. Kath Halliday explained how a roadtrip involving visits to 143 radiology departments in England helped boost her team's understanding of imaging services. She encountered significant variations, particularly when it came to digital systems.
After a career spanning 40 years, you might think Prof. Gabriel Krestin, PhD, would be reflecting on "the good old days" and reliving the past. But Krestin is never a man to rest on his laurels, and at a special Dutch reception held in Chicago, he took out his crystal ball and looked into the future and the role of artificial intelligence.
The prizes for the 2500 digital posters were handed out at RSNA on 30 November. Europe's only magna cum laude award went to a research group in Nantes, France. Get the full story in our news report in the Molecular Imaging Community.
On a lighter note, sports enthusiasts were catered for well at the congress. Not only was there a 5K fun run but also World Cup games were broadcast live in McCormick Place. Hopefully RSNA attendees resisted all temptation to swig beer during the matches and shout abuse at the big screen!
